Mental Health & Family Support

Mental health support is urgently needed in Palestine. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental disorders rank among the primary causes of disability worldwide, significantly impacting an individual's ability to participate in society and fulfill their potential. In Palestine, the challenges of mental health are compounded by various social and economic factors, including conflict, poverty, and limited access to quality healthcare.

Data from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) and the Palestinian Ministry of Health underscore the imperative for mental health support in Palestine. The PCBS reports that approximately 14% of the Palestinian population suffers from a mental disorder, with higher rates among women and younger age groups. The Ministry of Health also reveals that the demand for mental health services in Palestine far exceeds the available resources, leaving many individuals without access to the care they require.

The primary objective of the mental health program is to empower individuals and families affected by trauma to develop resilience, recognize and manage emotions, and cultivate healthy relationships that enhance their overall well-being, both at an individual and community level. To complement the education and social-emotional learning provided to our children and youth beneficiaries, we offer school-based counseling. This enables therapists and social workers to collaborate closely with TYO and UNRWA teachers in addressing the mental health needs of students.

In addition to our school-based counseling, the community mental health program includes workshops and training sessions to raise awareness about mental health within the community. We are expanding our mental health team with specialists, conducting identification and pre-assessment of cases, and developing individualized treatment plans. Our team provides services such as customized interventions, therapy, home rehabilitation, economic support, and 24/7 assistance.

Therapeutic approaches encompass individual therapy, couple therapy, group therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, family systems therapy, narrative therapy, and positive psychology.

According to individual needs, our social workers also refer individuals to specialized mental health services. We have established a network within the community, collaborating with local partners, including schools and refugee camp committees. This network fosters collaboration and offers a community support system through which at-risk adults and children can learn about and access mental health services.

With the support of Qatar Fund for Development, the Mental Health program was launched in November 2018 to provide access to mental health services to those most in need.
