Welcome Summer I 2012 Interns!

Meet the newest members of the TYO team, the Summer 2012 Interns: Sarah, Hilary, Jay, Mitch, Mary-Jo and Hannah!

Sarah

Sarah is originally from Lancaster, PA and is a student studying international politics and will be entering her senior year this fall. Previous to joining TYO this session, Sarah was living abroad in Irbid, Jordan studying Arabic. Her previous teaching experience includes a kindergarten Spanish class and a summer tutoring children and adolescents in Guatemala. This summer, Sarah will be teaching Arts & Crafts, English for The Women's Group, Community English, and Professional Competency at An-Najah University.

Hilary

Hilary originally comes from Hermitage, PA but has been studying abroad in Nepal, conducting research on the expat community. Hilary's background includes teaching English to 6 and 7 year olds in Germany and developing AIDS questionnaires for youth in Uganda. After the summer, Hilary will return to Gettysburg College to complete her  degree in philosophy. While in Nablus, Hilary will be teaching Art & Music, Fitness for The Women's Group, Community English, and Professional Competency at An-Najah University.

Jay

Jay is from East Landing Michigan and is currently studying Sociology and Education Studies at Middlebury College in Vermont. This past spring, he spent time off-campus working for a program on poverty, inequality, and social change at a K-8 school where he developed a social justice-oriented curriculum. This summer, Jay will be teaching Music & Drama, IT for The Women's Group, Community English, and Professional Competency at An-Najah University.

Mitch

Mitch studied Islamic History at UC Santa Cruz. Originally from a small town north of San Francisco, Mitch has since left the west coast to pursue his passion for the Arabic language. Before joining TYO, Mitch was in Cairo teaching English, improving his Arabic, and enjoyed working with local 'shebab' in Cairo - especially in starting a basketball league for youth. This summer, Mitch will be teaching Sports & Health, IT for The Women's Group, Community English, and Professional Competency at An-Najah University.

Mary-Jo

Mary-Jo is a recent graduate of Central Connecticut State University with a degree in Sociology. Previous to joining TYO, she served as a community outreach specialist for a non-profit that provides services for individuals living with disabilities in Brattleboro, VT. Previously, Mary-Jo worked with Girl Scouts of America and with students in Ghana, inspiring a love for mathematics through art for children 8-14.  This summer, Mary-Jo will be teaching Mad Science (a fun and exciting class revolving around science experiments), Fitness for The Women's Group, Community English, and Professional Competency at An-Najah University.

Hannah

Hannah was born and raised on the East Coast but for school, has relocated to Minnesota, studying International Studies, Religious Studies, and Arabic at Macalester College. This will be Hannah's second summer in Nablus - she was with TYO in 2010. This summer, Hannah will be teaching Art & Critical Thinking, English for The Women's Group, Community English, and Professional Competency at An-Najah University.
