Meet the Summer 2013 Interns!

IMG_0218 Meet the newest members of the TYO team, the Summer 2013 Interns: Kyra, Jenna, Jessica, Emma, Eleanor, Debra and Elizabeth.

Kyra

Kyra is a native of Brooklyn, NY and is a current student at George Washington University studying International Affairs with a concentration in Global Public Health and International Development. Kyra was an organizer for the youth-led organization New York-2-New Orleans (NY2NO) where she helped youth realize their potential as vehicles for creating sustainable change in a community. She was also a summer camp counselor where she planned lessons including soccer games, dance classes, collage workshops and writing projects.

Jenna

From Atlanta, GA, Jenna is currently a sophomore at Boston University studying Health Science and pre-med science. Jenna participated in an educational outreach program called La Amistad where she mentored and tutored Hispanic students and provided one-on-one basic reading, writing, mathematics and English skills. She spent two summers studying abroad in Morocco while in high school and is looking forward to being in this part of the Middle East.

Jessica

Jessica is a current junior majoring in International Studies and French at Arcadia University outside of Philadelphia. This past semester, Jessica studied in Istanbul, Turkey where she fell in love with the city. While in Istanbul, Jessica facilitated weekly English courses for Turkish children ages 10-11 and is excited to share her skills with the youth of Nablus.

Emma

Emma is from Boulder, CO and a current sophomore at Smith College, in MA, where she is studying psychology and education. She's passionate about global education and women's reproductive healthcare, volunteering her time in various organizations. Emma tutored children extensively, working with at-risk children from low-income families and children with disabilities at The Family Learning Center in Boulder, CO, Project Take Charge, I Have A Dream Phoenix Class and Homework House. This is Emma's first time in the Middle East.

Eleanor

Eleanor, from Oak Park, IL, recently graduated from Macalester College in Saint Paul MN, majoring in Classics and minoring in Religious Studies and Middle Eastern Studies. She volunteered at Overlook Farm in Rutland, MA, running educational programming for youth. Eleanor also worked with children in various capacities, providing childcare to pre-Kindergarten children as well as daycare for single mothers. Eleanor studied abroad in Morocco last spring and is excited to visit a different part of the Middle East this summer.

Debra

Debra is originally from Utah and recently graduated from Georgetown University with an M.A. in Conflict Resolution after receiving her B.A. in International Relations from Gonzaga University in 2009. Prior to TYO, Debra was a summer camp director as well as a reading clinician, creating personalized one-on-one learning programs for disadvantaged children. Debra also has extensive experience in sports through peacebuilding. She was an ambassador at Doha Goals and a coach at Breakout Lacrosse in Washington DC.

Elizabeth

Elizabeth is originally from Chicago, IL but has been living in Cairo, Egypt and recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in Middle Eastern Studies & Arabic Language. Elizabeth volunteered for the C.H.I.L.D Foundation, encouraging literacy skills in pre-Kindergarten children as well as working as a summer camp counselor at East Bank Club in Chicago, where she developed engaging art and music activities for two and three-year-olds.
