How TYO Helps My Daughter

Last week I met with a mother who has been sending her 12 year old daughter to TYO's Homework Help class this session. The mother, Jenan, spoke with me about her daughter Bara'a, her continued need of support in mathematics, and the impact Homework Help has had on Bara'a's education.

Why do you send Bara'a to an academic support class?

Bara'a is a bright girl but sometimes struggles in math. When she comes home with math-related schoolwork and wants help, her father and I are unable to provide her with the support ourselves. We cannot help her because she is at a level where her mathematics is too difficult for us. My personal education level has not exceeded the 9th grade. Everyday, Bara'a would tell me she needed help in math and because I couldn't provide any support, she would recieve low results in her exams. Now, I send Bara'a to Homework Help because the trained volunteers can teach her concepts that I never could.

Have you tried sending Bara'a any other academic support centers in Nablus?

It is difficult to send her to other centers because they are located so far away from us. To send her to a distant center would mean that I would have to send her alone to the other side of Nablus. Not only am I uncomfortable with sending Bara'a so far away on her own, but also, daily transportation fees to and from a center is expensive. And the registration fees on top of it are not feasible for our family.

Why you have you chosen to send your daughter to Homework Help at TYO?

I am an active participant with TYO's programs for women. I very much trust their staff and they are doing well in our community. Both my children, Bara'a and Saleem, have been taking classes at TYO for years and are comfortable with the center themselves. Fortunately, as residents of Khallet-al Amood, TYO's center is just a 5 minute walk away. TYO's Homework Help volunteers are well educated and are students at local universities in Nablus. They are fully capable of helping my daughter in mathematics and even in various other subjects whenever she needs it. Like all of TYO programming, sending Bara'a to Homework Help is completely free, making TYO the best possible option for my daughter.

Have you noticed any changes in Bara'a after participating with Homework Help at TYO?

Before TYO's Homework Help, Bara'a had low math scores. The two of us would cry when she received 5/10 and 7/15 on her exams. We were both frustrated every night. But now, after coming to TYO, Bara'a is able to grasp math concepts and both of us are much happier. As always, I am sure that TYO is the best choice not only for me to improve myself but also for my children. Because of that, I told all the people around me to send their children to Homework Help if they have any problems helping their children with their schoolwork.
