TYO Intern Alumni: Where are They Now?

Colin Powers

TYO provides one of the most unique avenues for professional and personal development that I have ever come across. The experience is total and diverse and I cannot speak highly enough of it.

A Hastings, NY native, Colin taught Big Brother Club, Community English, Homework Help and Midnight Soccer in the Spring of 2011.

What was your favorite moment/story from your time with TYO?

All of the evenings spent with the neighborhood kids playing in our Midnight Soccer League were really special. The enthusiasm they brought and the relationships they built with the university volunteers were truly incredible.

What do you miss most about TYO or Nablus?

I miss everything. The staff at TYO are awesome, the community, the kids, the energy, the call to prayer, the food, the hummus (oh lord, the hummus), and all the time in Munir's taxi.

What have you been up to after leaving Nablus and what are your plans for the future?

I am currently in Bulgaria on a Fulbright Scholarship, and will be attending Johns Hopkins' School of Advanced International Studies next year.

How do you think TYO affected you personally and professionally?

TYO was central to my maturity as a man and professional. The tenets upon which the organization runs, the focus on accountability, monitoring and evaluation, collaboration and teamwork, and the tutelage the Center Director and Intern Coordinator offered in helping me immerse in that professional culture have been of great benefit.

Do you have any advice for anyone considering applying for a TYO internship?

TYO provides one of the most unique avenues for professional and personal development that I have ever come across. The experience is total and diverse and I cannot speak highly enough of it.
