From Adversity to Achievement

Born in Nablus, Reem lived for a couple of years in Dubai with her family, but always dreamed of returning to her home country. Together with her partner, Ahmad, they moved back to Palestine with a vision to open their own business and contribute to their community.

In Dubai, Reem and Ahmad discovered a love for delicious sweets and pastries, which sparked a desire to bring those delightful flavors to the people of Nablus. Despite their engineering backgrounds, their passion for baking led them to learn the craft independently. And with determination and hard work, they soon launched an online bakery and pastries shop, offering a taste of their Dubai experience to their hometown.

The support and help they received at every step from their families, including caring for their young daughter, Sham, played a crucial role in helping them navigate through tough times.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, they faced significant economic challenges. Yet, their resilience and innovative spirit kept their business afloat. They adapted by implementing new strategies, expanding their menu, and eventually opening a charming local branch near the university in Nablus, creating a cozy spot for students and locals to enjoy their treats.

More recently, the escalating insecurity, economic instability, and mobility restrictions have caused a decline in business activity in Palestine, contracting the national economy. As small business owners, Reem and Ahmad are directly impacted by these challenges. Nevertheless, they remain committed to their business and their employees, refusing to let any of their team go despite the hardships.

As a participant in TYO’s TasteMasters Program, Reem's involvement equipped her with essential skills in finance, risk management, and creative thinking. The program significantly strengthened her entrepreneurial mindset, providing her with the energy and motivation to endure the difficult times in Palestine. It expanded her network by connecting her with other program participants, as well as with TYO staff and trainers who provided high-quality training, and continue to offer supervision and support.

Reem pitched this innovative idea during the TasteMasters’ closing ceremony and was awarded seed funding to improve and sustain their business. With this funding, they are now investing in new equipment and facilities, and collaborating with mentors and coaches at TYO to enhance their efficiency, strengthen their branding, and expand their market presence.

June 27th marks World Micro, Small, & Medium-Sized Enterprises Day.

Reem and Ahmad’s story reflects the transformative potential of entrepreneurship and MSMEs to empower individuals and communities in driving sustainable development and equitable economic growth.
