Humans of Nablus 53

My name is Yosef Jamal Haj. I am a Palestinian from Balata Camp, located on the east side of the city of Nablus. I recently graduated from the Arab American University (AAUP) with a major in Computer Systems Engineering, and I am proud to say I achieved a good GPA.

There are a lot of things to love about Nablus. As a Nabulsi, my favorite thing is the refugee camps in the city, the community around them, and how united we are. And, of course, I cannot forget the Old City, the lovely people there, and the sweets we are famous for – the Knafeh!

I have many hobbies. I enjoy drawing, trying DIY projects, and playing the violin, always using art to express myself. I am passionate about learning new skills, technologies, and languages, and I am also enthusiastic about meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures. What motivates me is being able to apply all this knowledge to help others.

I have always wanted to work in an environment where I can support the community where I grew up. And now, I feel I am in a thrilling stage of my life because I have found this opportunity at TYO.

As a local intern at TYO, I teach children from 1st through 8th grades the basics of computing: hardware components and essential software skills for their future daily lives, such as using email, Microsoft tools, and browsing the internet safely to avoid content that could potentially harm their mental and physical health. I also get the chance to facilitate computing lessons across TYO's different programs, empowering women and youth to benefit from new computer skills.

In addition, I provide tech support for the TYO staff, assist teachers in executing their plans in the classroom, and offer help wherever and whenever needed, always looking for ways to integrate technology and education.

The environment here inspires me to be productive and efficient. I have gained a lot of experience by teaching children and interacting with the community members. It has also given me a chance to improve my English language skills and widen my network of connections.

To sum up, I would say TYO has become my new home. As a freshly graduated engineer, I am truly inspired to work here. In the future, I plan to continue my education, obtain a master's degree, and travel around the world.

Yousef is a local intern in TYO’s summer session of 2024.
