Meeting People Where They Are: The Success Story of Sujood Bani Odeh

Sujood Bani Odeh is from Tamoun, a village near Jenin. Sujood graduated from Hisham Hijjawi College in 2015 with a degree in Office Administration and enjoys writing poetry and short stories in her free time. Before becoming a volunteer, Sujood would accompany her sister while she volunteered. Having enjoyed the experience and the work TYO was doing, so Sujood decided to become a volunteer herself. She has been a volunteer with the After-school Academic Support for Kids program for one session.

I majored in IT for my degree at An-Najah University and have since struggled to find a job. Last session I decided to volunteer at TYO and it was so much fun. I learned I love working with children because they are silly and make me smile. When I am here I am filled with so much happiness. Now I know that I enjoy my time working with children more than IT, so I hope to find a job where children are the focus.

Education is so important. We need education so that we can develop ourselves and develop our country, and also because education really helps people.  I love working with the little children, but it can be hard.  In the beginning, they always started to cry, and it can be hard to control them, but we try.  We try to hold them and be soft to them.  And we succeed!  My best memory of playing with them is when we went outside with another class and played football with my class against his.  My team won!

Masarah Kana’an was born and raised in Nablus. She studied Early Childhood Education at Al Rawda College until her graduation in 2014. Masarah has been active with TYO since February 2016 as both a student in the STEP! II EFL Program and as a volunteer with the Youth Service Learning Program. tAlways eager to help others, Masarah began volunteering with the Core Child Program because she wants to help educate and help children to grow in a positive atmosphere within the Nablus community.

I am having a great time with the kids at TYO. After my Bachelor’s degree, I would like to continue my studies and accomplish my dream of opening an English club for children. I would like to use my experience to make a lasting impact in the lives of children in the region. Children are very clever, they communicate with other children very easily most of the time.
