Meeting People Where They Are: The Success Story of Sujood Bani Odeh

Sujood Bani Odeh is from Tamoun, a village near Jenin. Sujood graduated from Hisham Hijjawi College in 2015 with a degree in Office Administration and enjoys writing poetry and short stories in her free time. Before becoming a volunteer, Sujood would accompany her sister while she volunteered. Having enjoyed the experience and the work TYO was doing, so Sujood decided to become a volunteer herself. She has been a volunteer with the After-school Academic Support for Kids program for one session.

I majored in IT for my degree at An-Najah University and have since struggled to find a job. Last session I decided to volunteer at TYO and it was so much fun. I learned I love working with children because they are silly and make me smile. When I am here I am filled with so much happiness. Now I know that I enjoy my time working with children more than IT, so I hope to find a job where children are the focus.

Boys often ask me, “Why are you teaching us sports?” As a Sports major at An-Najah University, a second degree black belt in taekwondo on the Palestinian national team, and a sports fan, I do not take these comments seriously. However, they show that a girl does not usually teach sports to boys. I aspire to change this belief by overcoming stereotypes and teaching that boys and girls can have equal opportunities and talents.

Masarah Kana’an was born and raised in Nablus. She studied Early Childhood Education at Al Rawda College until her graduation in 2014. Masarah has been active with TYO since February 2016 as both a student in the STEP! II EFL Program and as a volunteer with the Youth Service Learning Program. tAlways eager to help others, Masarah began volunteering with the Core Child Program because she wants to help educate and help children to grow in a positive atmosphere within the Nablus community.

I have realized that education is the greatest method for achieving understanding. I hope to become a physician in the future because I believe that through medicine I will be able to connect to the world. By speaking English fluently, I will connect with a greater pool of scientists and maybe they will be able to come to Palestine, meet Palestinian physicians, and create and teach projects.

When an Opportunity Presents Itself: The Success Story of Haneen Zitawi

Haneen Zitawi is from Jamma’in, a village outside of Nablus. She attended Al-Quds Open University and graduated in 2014 with a degree in English Teaching Methods. She learned of Tomorrow’s Youth Organization when she saw an ad on Facebook published by Al Quds Open University advertising volunteer opportunities working with children. Haneen plans to be a teacher in the future and wanted to know how to deal with students and children and learn how to solve problems in the classroom.

I love working with the kids at TYO because they have so much respect for the rules. I want to put these rules in every school in Palestine. For example, the kids only eat healthy foods, and they always clean their hands before and after eating. We have an expression in Arabic that says that teaching little kids is like carving into a stone, because once they learn the rules, they never forget them.

Waed Bsharat is from a village called Tammun. She recently graduated with a degree in business administration from Al Quds Open University in Tubas. She heard about Tomorrow’s Youth Organization from a friend, who said that TYO was a fun and interesting place to volunteer. Waed always volunteered at the university because it was required, but had never volunteered because she wanted to do something for herself.

I am having a great time with the kids at TYO. After my Bachelor’s degree, I would like to continue my studies and accomplish my dream of opening an English club for children.
